St. Joe’s Hospital is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the death of one of its mental health patients.
Steve Mesic was killed June 7th in an interaction with Hamilton Police.
Officers were sent to the Linc after reports of a man walking in and out of traffic.
There was a confrontation and Mesic was shot and killed.
That was after he signed himself out of St. Joe’s mental health unit.
He was a voluntary patient there.
St. Joe’s vice-president of medical and academic affairs Dr. Hugh Fuller says a quality of care review is underway and it could take months to complete.
Fuller says it’s to see if there are improvements that can be made to the system for the benefit of the patient.
In the meantime, the SIU is continuing its investigation of the incident.
