There’s a lot to digest about the CRTC decision regarding Sun TV.
In a couple of weeks, the CRTC will attempt to devise a new method of putting all TV news networks on a level playing field, in which we, the customers, would be able to decide which of the news networks we want in our cable package.
But, I’m not sure that’s what Sun TV was looking for.
They wanted to get their snouts into the same feeding trough that CBC and CTV enjoy; it’s called ‘mandatory carriage’, and it means that their networks are automatically added to everyone’s cable, so we pay for it ,whether we want it or not.
Mandatory Carriage means an automatic audience for those networks and it means guarunteed revenue in the millions of dollars.
That’s attractive to Sun TV because they’ve suffered from low ratings and they’ve been bleeding red ink since they started.
But the CRTC is going to end the gravy train for all of those news networks.
If Sun TV or the CBC or CTV want more viewers and more revenue, they’re going to have to earn it, which is how the rest of us in the industry have been doing it since Day One.
No more free rides, and that’s as it should be.
