I must confess that there was a small part of me that wanted to see the expense scandal involving Pamela Wallin was overblown.
I respected her as an insightful and diligent journalist and like many others who met her, I found her to be a likeable and engaging person.
Notwithstanding that stellar reputation, the facts in the Deloitte audit paint a different picture.
Her claim that many of her flights to Toronto that she charged to taxpayers were because there was no direct flight from Ottawa to Saskatchewan, must come as a surprise to those who take the Ottawa to Saskatoon Air Canada flight every day.
There were numerous claims for flights to events that she claimed were ‘Senate business’, when in fact they were fundraisers for the Conservative Party; still others that , it turns out, she never actually attended.
Now, the RCMP are investigating the file to see if criminal charges are warrented.
It’s tragic to see the public self- destruction of someone who has accomplished so much in her career.
What’s even more tragic is, because of the cloke of secrecy that shrouds Senators and MP’s expense accounts, there are probably dozens of others in Ottawa who are doing the same things as Wallin and we’ll probably never hear about it.
