It’s a big day for United Steelworkers Local 8782.
They’re down in Pittsburgh today to discuss the lastest contract offer with the parent union and Head Office types from US Steel to see if they can end the latest lockeout.
It’s significant because it was a mmeting like this that ended the last lockout a few years ago.
And that’s not the only element of deja vu in this scenario.
A few weeks ago, the Union overwhelmingly turned down a US Steel offer, just like they did in the last contract stalemate.
I ‘get it’ that union execs want to squeeze every dollar they can for their membership in these situations.
But the playing field has changed significantly over the last few years.
International ownership and a shaky world economy have taken a lot of the leverage that unions used to have.
In all likelihood , this stand off will end because of this meeting and after months without a paycheque, they’ll head back to work for minimal gain.
Which begs the question, was it really worth it ?
