In the TV world, a ‘spinoff’ is a show that was spawned from an existing hit show.
With few exceptions, the spin off is usually a dismal failure.
‘Happy Days’ was a huge hit show; nobody remembers ‘Joanie Loves Chatchy’ ! (nor should they ).
Same thing in politics.
Kim Campbell was a spinoff of the Mulroney government and she didn’t last long.
Paul Martin was a spinoff of the Chretien government and stumbled through a minority government before getting ousted.
Now, Kathleen Wynne is a spinoff of the Dalton McGuinty government.
How long will this spinoff last ? It’s hard to tell.
Try as she might to show Ontario that she’s not like her old boss, the ‘sins of the father’ continue to haunt her.
And now, she’s proposing a series of user fees and tax hikes to pay for the government’s public transit master plan.
Tax increases are never popular, in a minority government they can be fatal.
Voters aren’t very impressed with the cast of characters in Wynne’s spinoff government.
And with special deals for teachers and a posssible tax increase, they’re not impressed with the plot line either.
Unless she can catch the voters fancy soon, she may find herself as the newest member of short-lived spinoff flops.
