Interesting discussion on the show yesterday about Munchausen Syndrome by proxy, a rather bizarre situation in which the parents of a child actually fake symtoms of a physical or emotional illness in their kids to gain medical attention for the child.
One of the doctors who did the study on Munchausen told us that some parents will expose their kids to bacteria or resort to physical or mental cruelty and then demand medications and sometimes medical procedures for their kids.
It’s disturbing to think that some parents would exact that kind of abuse on their kids.
As troubling as this syndrome is, we need to put it in context.
Those few who are affected by Munchausen Syndrome should not be confused with the thousands of parents who have spent years trying to navigate a medical system because their child’s symptoms don’t fit the cookie-cutter definition of a disease.
I know of one case where a patient’s continual complaint about arm pain was diagnosed as Munchausen until it was discovered that ,Oops, they misread the x ray and there was indeed a broken bone.
A parent who demands medical intervention may be afflicted by this syndrome, but most likely, they are loving, concerned parents who would do anything to ensure that their kids are healthy.
Faking it is rare, mostly it’s parents who care !
