“Yes We Cannon”.
That’s how Hamilton politicians feel about a proposal for a two-way bike lane on Cannon Street, between Sherman and Bay. The three-year pilot project has received unanimous approval from the general issues committee.
A neighbourhood group “Yes We Cannon” gathered over two thousand signatures in support of the initiative which will close one lane to traffic.
Denise O’Connor was among those speaking in support during Thursday’s meeting, noting that the project will provide an active transportation corridor and help children in ten schools along that corridor get to school safely.
Exactly when the bike lane will be established and which side of the street it will be located have yet to be finalized.
Exact costs must also be nailed down, but it’s estimated that the line painting, flower boxes and retrofitting of traffic signals will cost about half-a-million dollars.
