Looks like saner heads prevailed at a Planning meeting at City Hall the other day.
The committee voted not to appeal the Ontario Municipal Board ruling that allowed the Lynwood Charlton Hall move into the Corktown area.
It was the right move to make.
This farcical exercise dragged on far too long and cost too much time and money to try to placate the ever present ‘not in my backyard’ or NIMBY attitude that dominate the opposition to this plan.
Besides, not only did the OMB rule in favour of Lynwood Charlton, but in the ruling, the Commissioner shot down each and every one of the rather hollow argurments put forth by the City.
The Planning Committee decision must be ratified by all of the Councilors, and I know there are still a few intracktable Councilors who disagree with the OMB ruling.
But the saner heads on Council need to remind them that an appeal of this ruling would be a colossal waste of time and taxpayers money.
We saw the dark side of City Council in the Lynwood Charlton debate; the vote trading and misrepresentation of facts and mean-spiritedness seemed to dominate the process.
But it’s over now.
The OMB ruled that the City was wrong.
Appealing that ruling would only serve to make a bad situation worse.
