City Politicians have given the green light to a 17-million dollar plan for Scott Park.
The General Issues committee has recommended they sign a memorandum of agreement with the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board.
The cities commitment is for 17 million dollars to a new community centre at the former Scott Park site within the Pan Am Stadium precinct.
The community centre, including a pool, recreation centre and senior’s centre, would be built in conjunction with a new public high school.
The school board has provincial funding for the high school, which will replace Sir John A. MacDonald, Delta and Parkview in September 2016.
Councillor Sam Merulla says city councillors and school board trustees don’t have to like or trust each other, but as elected governing bodies he stresses that they must follow due diligence “in the best interest of the community”.
City Manager Chris Murray believes that any issues they have can be resolved, be they design, ownership or operating issues.
Merulla has also tabled a motion calling on the city to draw 7.75 million dollars from the future fund to pay for its portion of the project.
