The family of a 30-year-old patient who was beaten to death near St. Joe’s West 5th campus on the mountain is now suing the hospital.
The parents of Michael Brewer say the hospital is shirking its responsibility in the death and they are suing for 260-thousand dollars in damages.
Brewer was beaten by a fellow patient, Tyler Valcheff, on a soccer field near the hospital in May of 2012.
Valcheff has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and is serving an eight year prison sentence.
The suit alleges Brewer’s death was caused by negligence on the part of St. Joseph’s, including patient overcrowding, understaffing, and failure to provide a sufficient number of security guards around the hospital campus.
