Hamilton’s mayor says that he must be in a position to respond to tragic events.
As a result, Bob Bratina has announced his resignation from the city’s police services board.
Bratina says that the tragic police shooting of Steve Mezic has highlighted a conflict between statutory requirements of the police act and the notion that the mayor is the elected representative of all the people.
He stresses that his first instinct following Mezic’s death was to reach out to his family, but he adds that he was advised not to do so as a member of the police board.
Bratina adds that his decision should not be seen as a reflection of the performance of the chief or any other member of the force.
City Council must now designate a replacement for Bratina on the police services board.
