Summer must be over the teachers unions are back in the news again.
This time for comments on making Mothers and Fathers Day more inclusive (even changing the name) and also for their stance on hiring new teachers.
First let’s start with the union suggesting, as a discussion topic, to be more inclusive and mindful of those who may not be from what is considered a traditional family…Whether they be gay or simply single parent families. You can’t argue with that.
It was the religious right that blew it up in the media and made it seem we were about to lose these important Canadian traditions.
Relax, we’re not losing Father’s or Mother’s Day.
My question is why is the union involved in what is said in class? Isn’t that up to parents and education experts?
What I’d be more concerned with is the deal struck last school year with the Ontario Liberals and the teachers unions that would restrict boards to a seniority list when hiring new teachers. As oppose to hiring the best person for the job.
The Halton District School board is the latest to demand changes to Regulation 274 that ignores local input for a union approved list based on seniority.
The union claims experience is better, yes sometimes. But why not just pick the best person for the job?
Personally, after going through what we went through last school year with loss of extracurricular activities, do you really think the teachers unions are looking out for the best interest of your kids? Really?
I’d say, it’s all about keeping an over inflated membership and the dues rolling in no matter the cost to you, your kids or their education.
