Health Minister Deb Matthews says it’s time to have a discussion about assisted suicide in Ontario.
This sounds like another knee-jerk political reaction to a highly emotional issue that doesn’t address the real issue.
The Health Minister is clearly reacting to the emotional and heart wrenching video done by Dr. Donald Low, the famous Microbiologist, who died earlier this month from Brain Cancer.
None of us want to focus on the inevitability of death and sadly, most of us, especially our government, don’t want to acknowledge that our health care system has virtually ignored end of life care.
Many terminal patients are unable to access the proper care needed .
Funding for paliative and hospice care is woefully inadequate and frankly, many health care professionals in hospitals are not trained or equipped to handle end of life care.
The Health Minister needs to be reminded that there is a humane and sensitive method to deal with terminal illness that doesn’t include a lethal cocktail.
But that would take a funding committment from the government and I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for that to happen.
Even entertaining the idea of assisted suicide in Ontario would be opening up a Pandora’s Box that most of us and certainly not the government would be able to handle.
We’d rather the Minister of Health concentrate on improving our quality of life, not ending it.
