The Special Investigations Unit has cleared a Hamilton police officer in relation to the death of a 61-year-old man earlier this month.
During the evening of September 3rd, an officer responded to a call about a man standing on a bridge over the railway tracks on Centennial Parkway.
After speaking to the man, the officer asked him if he would like a ride, but he declined and said he would leave and started to walk away.
The SIU report says he then turned around and went back to the bridge.
The subject officer then met with another officer thinking the man might respond more favourably to somebody else. When they returned to the bridge, they couldn’t see anyone. Upon looking over the bridge, they saw the man lying on his back about ten metres below.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The SIU says the subject officer can’t be held criminally responsible for the tragic but voluntary act by the man.
