I’ve been saying for years that this whole idea of an Integrity Commissioner for Hamilton is a waste of time and money, and this latest instance is a classic example of why I feel that way.
On May 9th Council asked the Integrity Commissioner, Earl Basse, to determine if Mayor Bob Bratina broke the Code of Conduct during an animated face to face discussion with City Manager Chris Murray during a Council meeting.
Because of concerns about taking too long with past reports, Council specifically told the Integrity Guru that he had 60 days to deliver that report. Let me emphasize, 60 days !
Today, almost five months later, there is still no report.
I’m told that there is video evidence of the incident and, at best, three people to talk to, the Mayor , the City Manager and a Councilor who claims to have heard the discussion.
Why is this taking so long ?
As the saying goes, justice delayed is justice denied.
By the way, Mr Basse gets paid by the hour; I can’t wait to see his bill for services on this one !
But it’s not just about the money.
The way that Council has set this up gives the Integrity Commissioner no real power and he is really only allowed to offer a non binding opinion on these issues.
How many more times will this ineffective Integrity Charade go on before we admit that it’s a total waste of time and money ?
