The Hamilton Fire Department is reminding people about fire safety as it gears up for Fire Prevention Week.
This year’s theme is about preventing kitchen fires.
Chief Rob Simonds says unattended cooking is the leading cause of home fires in the City of Hamilton.
Some important tips to remember is to be mindful when using oil and high temperatures. Wear tight-fitting clothing or rolled up sleeves, keep a proper fitting lid near the stove so that if a pot catches fire, you can slide the lid over the pot and turn off the stove. Also never attempt to move a burning pot.
There will also be an oppourtunity for residents in the Keith neighbourhood to have mandatory smoke alarms installed in their homes free of charge tomorrow between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm.
Volunteers will be going door to door asking people if they need installation, and for those who also need the actual smoke alarms, they will be provided for free as well.
