Canada’s Information Commissioner, ( betcha didn’t know we had an Information Commissioner did you ?); anyway, her name is Suzanne Legault, and she says that the expense accounts of MP’s could easily be reported by making a minor amendment to the existing Freedom Of Information legislation.
The problem here is that each Member of Parliament spends tens of thousands of dollars of our money every year on things like their office budgets and travel, but also on entertainment and other things like those useless and very subjective news letters which are nothing more than expensive self promotion that you and I pay for.
With the recent expose on misspending by some Senators, taxpayers want to know what our MP’s are spending are money on.
MP’s from all Parties tell us that confidentiality laws prohibit them from revealing their spending habits.
But Commissioner Legault says that’s hogwash; MP’s created that self serving law and they can change it .
This is really all about fairness and accountability.
We’re told that governments don’t have enough money to fix our roads or to invest in our education and health care systems.
But our MP’s spend thousands of dollars on mail outs that show us what barb bque’s they attended and what babies they kissed.
It’s about time that MP’s showed us where they spend our money and let us decide if it’s worth it.
