You might say they skated away with the big prize.
A Hamilton company, RZR Skate Blades, was the grand prize winner of the Lions Lair, where would-be entrepreneurs pitch their ideas to a panel of judges.
The company will receive legal and accounting services, team dynamics training, video production plus, 15-thousand dollars in cash.
RZR designs and manufactures performance skate blades with its own technology, which creates a blade edge that is five times harder, and a core that can withstand three times greater impact than a standard blade.
The company is comprised of Michael Verticchio, his brother Chris Verticchio and blade designer Nick Montecchia.
RZR says its blades allow for better acceleration, speed and cornering, and less resistance, which lowers muscle fatigue and reduces the risk of injury.
It adds the blades last about five times longer between sharpenings than traditional blades and come custom contoured out of the box.
The blades are manufactured in Hamilton and they sell for about $120 for standard sizes.
