We have your first real controversy surrounding the NHL’s new hybrid icing rule.
Ron Hainsey scored the winning goal, some 190 feet away, as Carolina rallied past the Maple Leafs 3-2 last night.
Jonathan Bernier thought it was icing when Hainsey’s shot from the Hurricanes defensive zone went down the ice untouched.
Bernier took a half-hearted whiff at the puck and had it slip through between his skate and the post and into the net.
One linesman had his hand up for icing, the other waved it off after Radek Dvorak beat Morgan Reilly to the faceoff dots.
The Leafs were obviously caught off guard.
Think Randy Carlyle is hammering that new rule into their craniums today?
Bernier is most to blame for the flub.
You play to the whistle, instead, the Leafs netminder assumed the whistle would blow the play dead.
And you know what happens when you assume?
