Police have cordoned off an area of the escarpment in Stoney Creek after a suspected body part was found on Tuesday.
Police say the remains were found off McNeilly Road by a hiker.
The remains, described as bone, have been sent to the Centre of Forensic Sciences to determine whether they are human or animal.
The area where they were found is not too far from where police had been searching for the remains of Shirley Treadwell last year.
It’s believed Treadwell died from natural causes in 2009 but was buried in a shallow grave by her niece, Melinda Evans.
Evans eventually pleaded guilty to improperly interfering with human remains after failing to report the death.
She also admitted to continuing to cash her Aunt’s disability checks. She was sentenced to two years in prison.
Treadwell’s remains have not yet been found.
