The sedentary nature of Canadian workplaces is becoming as much of a health risk as stress for many workers.
That, from a new survey of 400 Canadian employers by Sun Life Financial.
The survey shows 24% of the employers polled consider work-related stress and sedentary lifestyles the most serious health risks affecting their employees.
92% said healthy employees mean more productivity, better attendance and a stronger bottom line.
The Mental Health Commission of Canada says half-a-million Canadians are absent from work each week due to mental health issues.
And the commission says it costs the Canadian economy 50-billion dollars a year.
The study says 62% of the companies surveyed now offer wellness initiatives, with 51% reporting an increase in employee morale, and a 40% drop in absenteeism as a result of such programs.
