A leading expert on the steel industry says even though U.S. Steel is shutting down its manufacturing in Hamilton, the industry is still providing plenty of jobs in the Hammer.
Dr. Peter Warrian, a senior research fellow at the University of Toronto, says the steel industry in Canada will need more than 20-thousand new workers in the next five years to replace those who are retiring.
But he says a high school diploma is no longer enough to get a job.
The new workers need to have skills with at least a college diploma.
At ArcelorMittal Dofasco in Hamilton, they expect to hire up to 15-hundred employees in the next three to five years.
The company’s Vice President of Human Resources says they’ll be looking for highly skilled technologists and engineers.
