It’s a case of too much of a good thing.
Hamilton’s billion dollar building boom has overwhelmed city hall.
That is why five new employees are due to be added to the department to help handle the backlog of building permit applications.
The move will cost half-a-million dollars, but there’s little choice in spending the money.
The provincial building code act says the city must respond within 10 days to a residential building permit request.
It is 20 days for commercial or industrial permits.
The new hires have been approved at the committee level and council will vote on it next week.
However, it won’t add to the budget’s bottom line because the money is coming from the reserve fund.
