Last week, I mentioned that the key area that Hamilton Council should be focused on with US Steel is the future use of almost 300 Hectares of vacant land in the North End.
There’s a waiting list of companies looking for waterfront industrial land and it could mean new jobs and tax revenue for the City.
However, there are two major obstacles.
First of all, the land may not be available; US Steel could decide they don’t want to sell the property, or they could sell it to someone other than the City.
Then, there is the ludricrous idea of turning the land into a residential condo development.
I’m not kidding !
Apparently, some local politicos, including a Provincial MPP think condos would be a good fit on the old Stelco lands.
What a dumb idea.
Are they not aware that US Steel is not leaving Hamilton ?
Are they oblivious to the fact that National Steel Car and Arcelor Mittel and a number of other companies maintain thriving industrial operations in that area ?
I can see the marketing campaign now …. Condos By the Coke Oven !!
These politicians couldn’t find Hamilton’s North End with a compass and they clearly have no idea of Hamilton’s needs.
If these lands are available, it’s all about job creation and tax revenue.
Let’s not squander a great opportunity .
