New evidence suggests addiction to prescription medication in Hamilton is getting worse.
According to the Drug and Alcohol Treatment Information System, admission rates for local opioid withdrawal programs are now the second highest in the province.
Only northern Ontario has a higher rate.
One in four people who entered a withdrawal management program at St. Joseph’s Healthcare last year were opioid patients.
That’s up from 1 in 10 a decade ago.
And according to the coroner’s officer, opiate deaths now make up over half of all acute drug related deaths in the city.
