The good news is, it looks like the new stadium is coming along nicely.
The not so good news is, it appears that Hamilton is getting passed over for some of that critical ‘Legacy Funding’ for Pan Am facilities.
There was a big ‘ bells and whistles’ announcement about $70 million in Legacy funding for the upkeep of newly constructed Pan Am facilities the other day.
There’s money for the new Aquatic Centre in Toronto, the new stadium and track at York University and , for the Velodrome in Milton, but nothing for the new stadium in Hamilton .
So, why is Hamilton getting shut out ? No one seems to know.
From the outset, the Pan Am people talked about this Legacy fund; it’s supposed to be used to maintain the new facilities so they can attract national and international events in the future.
We’re used to the lion’s share of funding for anything going to Toronto, but we usually get a few bucks from the bottom of the barrel.
We’re not asking for special consideration here.
This Legacy fund was part of the original Pan Am plan and we were led to believe that our stadium would be included.
We used to have a strong voice at Queens Park to fight these battles ; that’s how we got funding for the stadium and new hospitals and Mohawk College.
Now it appears that no one is standing up for Hamilton and once again, we don’t get our fair share.
