Hamilton’s Police Chief Glen DeCaire is setting the stage for next year’s budget process.
He’s already presented a provincial report showing that Hamilton has fewer officers per capita than London, Windsor and Toronto.
DeCaire also says the downtown federal halfway house for high risk convicts is an ongoing concern.
The Chief told the Police Services Board that there is a detective who works with staff at the facility to monitor inmates whenever they hit the street.
There are about 25 high-risk federal convicts, including killers, rapists and thieves at the York Boulevard hostel at any given time.
While DeCaire says Hamilton needs more cops, he feels he can squeeze some more efficiency out of an already lean service.
The 2014 budget process is expected to begin next month.
