Hamilton has been put between a rock and a hard place with a tight deadline looming.
It has been told the city run “provincial offences court and offices” will have to move out of the Sopinka Courthouse when the current lease is up in August of 2017.
That’s taken the city by surprise and it’s now looking at options.
The least expensive, at 32-million dollars, is to move to the old courthouse directly across Main Street East.
But the city declared it surplus a year ago and it would also have to dislodge the current tenant, McMaster University’s Continuing Education Program.
The Mac program would only have a year to find a new location.
The General Issues Committee has asked staff to take a more detailed look at the plan and report back in 60 days.
In particular, they want to know how the 32-million dollar surprise expenditure would impact next year’s tax levy.
