The planned redevelopment of Joseph Brant Hospital has been upsized.
Officials have announced that the expansion will include 172 new patient rooms within a seven-storey tower, up from about 100 new beds within a six-storey tower.
The tower will also house the Burlington hospital’s new emergency department within the latest design.
Health Minister Deb Matthews, in Burlington for the announcement on Monday morning, says the changes allow for the percentage of single-patient rooms at Joe Brant to increase to 70%.
She says that is important not only to patients and their families, but also in regards to infection control.
The cost of rebuilding Burlington’s hospital, which is estimated at more than 300 million dollars, will be finalized once the contract is awarded next year.
The city and Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation have each committed 60 million to the project which is to be completed by 2018.
