Additional cash to provide 10 extra beds at the women’s shelter “Mary’s Place” in Hamilton has committee support, but there are warnings that the city’s reserve fund is getting dangerously low.
The Emergency and Community Services Committee has also approved tapping into reserves to cover an expected 2-million dollar shortfall for homelessness programs at food banks, the YWCA and disability support clients.
The city’s Housing Director Gillian Hendry says she is very concerned that the money coming from the province is not enough and she says this situation cannot go on indefinitely.
Hendry says councillors should go to Queen’s Park to lobby for greater funding.
The committee’s decision goes on to full council for a vote.
