The City of Hamilton is dipping into its reserves to help the homeless.
City council has agreed to use more than 2-million dollars in reserve funds next year to maintain homelessness programming, which has been put at risk because of provincial funding cuts.
The decision will immediately add shelter beds for single women, as well as maintain funding for food banks, the YWCA and disability support clients in 2014.
City officials have also decided to continue the affordable transit program for at least another year.
It provides half price bus passes to low income residents.
