South Africa’s president says Nelson Mandela has died.
Jacob Zuma made the announcement and ordered that all flags in the country fly at half-staff until the funeral.
Zuma said. “Our nation has lost its greatest son. Our people have lost a father.”
Mandela was 95, but had battled plenty of health issues including a recurring lung infection that placed him in the hospital a number of times.
Mandela served 27 years in prison but was released in 1990 thanks to an international campaign.
He helped lead negotiations to abolish apartheid and establish multiracial elections in 1994.
That election was won by Mandela who served as president until 1999.
