The Canadian contingent has landed in South Africa for the funeral of Nelson Mandela.
Joining PM Stephen Harper on the grueling 18 hour flight was a vast array of politicians including past PM’s Brian Mulroney who was one of the first to put economic sanctions on South Africa for their apartheid ways and Mandela’s 27 year prison sentence. Kim Campbell who was first to remove those sanctions when conditions were met.
Jean Chretien followed up years later by making Mandela an honourary Canadian citizen was also on the plane along with opposition leader NDPer Thomas Mulcair, premiers from Nova Scotia, Alberta, the Yukon, NWT, five MP’s, and the national chief of the Assembly of First Nations. Joe Clark will also be in attendance.
Following the memorial in Johannesburg, the delegation will join a procession Wednesday in Pretoria, where Mandela`s body lies in state.
A state funeral will be held Sunday.
You’d think with that kind of time and manpower the group could brain storm and get some real work accomplished on the journey.
I find it amazing this group can get it together for the biggest photo op of their generation and yet can’t get a handle on our soaring electricity bills or the senate scandal.
I wonder what Mandela would say to that?
