Well, tell me you didn’t see this one coming.
Canada Post has announced that they’ll be phasing out door to door mail delivery in urban areas over the next five years.
The Federal government has shown a propensity for cost cutting programs and it was inevitable that Canada Post would be targeted eventually.
In fairness though, Canada Post may just be a victim of the times.
Almost 70% of residential mail is delivered to those community mail boxes now .
And, even at that, volumes are down because most of us rely on social media , e mail, texting , direct deposit and on line banking instead of the traditional snail mail , as it’s been dubbed.
Of course, there will be jobs lost and that’s regrettable.
More than a few friends of mine had long careers with Canada Post, and aside from the odd miserable weather day, the inevitable sore back and of course those cranky dogs , it wasn’t a bad way to make a living.
Some people simply don’t like the idea of using the community mail boxes, others may have accessibility issues and those will have to be addressed.
Some will complain about the decision, but they’ll most likely vent their anger to their MP in an e mail .
The times, they are a changin’.
