I don’t mean to fast forward past Christmas, but the New Year will also mark the official beginning of the 2014 Municipal Election Campaign.
Up til now, anyone who’s talked about running is just talking; next month they’ll be able to put their money down and register as an official candidate.
As always, the Mayor’s race is the most fascinating.
The incumbant , Bob Bratina, has already told us that he will seek re-election , but for some reason, incumbancy isn’t necessarily an advantage for Hamilton Mayors.
The last time a Hamilton Mayor was re-elected was 1997, when Bob Morrow cruised to an easy victory.
Since then, everyone who’s been elected Mayor has only served one term.
Bob Wade, who defeated Morrow in the 2000 election, served one term and then retired, but his two successors, Larry DiIanni and Fred Eisenberger, were both defeated after only one term in office.
Will that one term trend continue ? Who knows ?
Of course, it may depend on who else is in the race.
At least one City Councilor has indicated that he’ll take a run at the job.
We’ve heard that one or two more Councilors may jump into race too.
And, speculation continues that a former Mayor or two may decide to test the political waters one more time.
Wouldn’ t that be interesting ?
We’re still 10 months away from the election, but it looks like it’s going to be a heck of a race .
