The Canadian Football League held their Expansion Draft yesterday, which allowed the new Ottawa team a chance to poach players from the rosters of existing teams.
In the process, the Tiger Cats lost their Centre, Marwan Hage to the Ottawa Redblacks.
I feel badly for anyone who has to play for a team named ‘Redblacks’ , but I feel worse that Hamilton is losing Marwan Hage.
Marwan is a very good football player, but more importantly, he is a great citizen of Hamilton and we can’t afford to lose people of his calibre.
Since he came to Hamilton 10 years ago, Marwan has enriched this community.
His Hage’s Heroes program allows for ‘at risk’ youth to attend Tiger Cats games.
He has spent countless hours working with kids, talking in schools, hospital visits, organizing mini camps for kids and assisting new Canadians adjust to their new Country, which is something Marwan and his family had to do when they came to Canada from the Middle East.
Yesterday’s decision was a football decision and we all know that football can be a cold-hearted business.
If Marwan accepts the move to Ottawa, the Tiger Cats lose an all star lineman, but the Hamilton community loses a guy who’s been a hero to thousands of Hamilton kids.
