A Boxing Day tragedy along the Welland Canal Parkway Trail has claimed the lives of two snowmobilers.
Niagara Police say the men, a 28 year old St. Catharines man and a 25 year old Thorold man, were killed when they collided with a fallen tree early yesterday evening in Thorold.
A passenger on one of the machines, a 22 year old woman from St. Catharines, was airlifted to Hamilton General in serious but stable condition.
Police and EMS were called to the scene at about 6 o’clock —- by a citizen who heard cries for help coming from the west side of the canal.
Police are still investigating but say all riders were wearing the proper safety equipment and dangerous and careless operation of the snowmobiles have been ruled out as factors.
Names have not been released at the request of the victim’s families.
