The frigid waters of Lake Ontario await for hundreds of brave polar bears.
Up to 800 people are expected to participate in the 2014 edition of the New Year’s Day Polar Bear Dip at Oakville’s Coronation Park.
It’s a fundraiser that has collected more than one million dollars for World Vision, since it started 29 years ago. Money raised this time will go towards clean water projects in Rwanda.
Spokesman Todd Courage says they drew 750 on New Year’s Day 2013, and the crowds seem to get bigger each year, regardless of weather.
Hundreds of others will participate in Polar Bear Dips in Grimsby and Port Dover. Hamilton’s event has been cancelled because of unsafe ice conditions at Hutch’s.
