Rail volume could soon triple

Hamilton, ON, Canada / AM900 CHML

Despite the massive explosion and fire in Lac Megantic last summer that claimed 47 lives, a Hamilton Transportation Lawyer expects to see a big increase in rail shipments of oil in the near future.

Heather Devine, speaking to the Translog Conferece at McMaster, says there are a dozen plans to increase volume, which could eventually more than triple the number of barrels moved daily by train.

By 2009 oil by rail shipments averaged 230-thousand barrels a day and Devine says rail is very safe for the most part, but when accidents happen, they are very large.

Her comments come on the same day as three men appeared in Quebec court chargedĀ  with 47 counts of criminal negligence causingdeath in the Lac Megantic disaster.
