Legal arguments were the order of the day, as the coroner’s inquest into the circumstances of the death of Steve Mesic continues.
The five member jury was excused on Wednesday, as lawyers discussed the relevance of testimony from a witness that the Empowerment Council wishes to call. The council is a voice for clients of mental health and addiction services.
Witness testimony will resume on Thursday, with final submissions still expected on Friday.
Among those the court will hear from on Thursday, is the Hamilton Police Service’s use of force expert.
Jurors will then make recommendations aimed at preventing deaths similar to Mesic who was shot and killed by police last June outside of his mountain townhouse. Unknown to the officers on scene he’d been suffering from depression and anxiety and had walked away from voluntary psychiatric care at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
