“Sweetheart deal” for ArcelorMittal Dofasco

Hamilton, ON, Canada / AM900 CHML

Environment Hamilton says ArcelorMittal Dofasco has been given a “sweetheart deal.”

The local environmental watchdog says the Ministry of Environment has given the steelmaker a “free pass” on pollution infractions until 2019.

Environment Hamilton has released a trail of email in which Ministry officials say they do not intend to pursue further investigation into the Hamilton coke plant “that may or may not result in charges ” over the next five years.

The company has committed to spend 87-million dollars in upgrades by 2019.

ArcelorMittal Dofasco recently pleaded guilty to six illegal emissions to air stemming from 2012, resulting in 400-thousand dollars in fines.
