Downtown stores urged to stay open later

Hamilton, ON, Canada / AM900 CHML

Hamilton’s manager of urban renewal has issued a challenge to downtown businesses.

He says it’s time they stay open later.

Glen Norton says one way to attract more new residents to the core is to give them the same conveniences they get in the suburbs, and that means retail outlets have to stay open past 6 o’clock.

Many downtown shop owners believe there aren’t enough customers to warrant staying open late.

But Norton is asking that they try an experiment this summer.

He wants them to stay open later for the next three or four months to see how many customers they actually get.
