The McMaster Marauders opened up the OUA regular season with an exciting 34-27 overtime win over the Guelph Gryphons at Ron Joyce Stadium.
A sell-out crowd of 5247 saw the Marauders fall behind 24-9 in the third quarter before they mounted a furious comeback.
Freshman Dan Petermann, from Cardinal Newman in Hamilton made a beautiful catch in the end zone, of a 12 yard pass from Marshall Ferguson to cut the Guelph lead to 24-15, then the Marauders converted a two-point convert to cut the lead to 24-17 at the end of three quarters.
After trailing 27-19, with 4:38 left, Ferguson drove the Marauders downfield, capped off by a 33 yard TD pass to Ben O’Conner with 2:34 left. Another two-point conversion tied the game 27-27, then, the Marauders had a chance to get the win, but a 45 yard field goal attempt by Tyler Crapigna with less than a minute left was blocked, and that sent the game into overtime.
In the extra frame, Ferguson ran the ball in for a 9 yard TD, and the extra point made it 34-27.
The Gryphons couldn’t score when they had the ball, meaning the Marauders upped their record at Ron Joyce Stadium against Guelph to 4-0.
Ferguson was good on 29-46 passes for 303 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
Dan Vandervoort lead the Marauders with seven catches for 83 yards, O’Connor and Cameron had 5 catches each.
Wayne Moore had 15 carries for 73 yards for Mac.
Tyler Crapigna was good on field goals of 21, 23 and 37 yards, while Mac conceded two safeties and Guelph one.
The Marauders take on the 0-1 Waterloo Warriors, this Saturday at Warrior Field.
