Ticats open new home with win

Hamilton, ON, Canada / AM900 CHML

It wasn’t pretty but the Hamilton Tiger-Cats squeezed out their second win of the season 13-12 over the Toronto Argonauts in the annual Labour Day Classic.

The game started off with a bang as Beau Landry caused a fumble on the opening kickoff which led to a 29 yard field goal from Justin Medlock, the very first points scored at the brand new Tim Horton’s Field.

Swayze Waters would get the Argos on the board with a booming 77 yard punt single.

On the ensuing drive the Cats would get the crowd on it’s feet driving 75 yards down the field and capping it with a 9 yard strike from Zach Collaros to Bakari Grant.

The first touchdown of the new field sent the crowd into a frenzy and commemorative foam footballs rained down on the field in celebration.

The Argos drew a couple of points back, wrapping up Mossis Madu in the endzone for a safety, one of two they had in the game.

Most of the second quarter would pass without a score until Justin Medlock hit a 23 yard field goal with  just under three minutes left to give Hamilton a ten point lead.

Despite having an overall great game the Ticats defense would let the Argos back into the game as they handed them 30 yards on three penalties allowing Ricky Ray to find Trent Guy for 20 yard major cutting the Cats lead to three.

The second half featured only a single scoring play as the defenses hunkered down and kept the offense to a minimum.

After Swayze Waters pinned the Tiger-Cats the Argos defense would stymie Collaros and the offense leading to a conceded safety by Justin Medlock.

But one point was as close as the Argos would get, the Hamilton defense closing the door on Ricky Ray and the Argos to start the second half of the CFL schedule with a big win.

The win gives Hamilton control of second in the East with a 2-6 record one game behind the division leading Argos who hold a 3-7 record.

The Cats are right back in action on Sunday when they travel to Montreal for their first meeting of the season with the Alouettes.

Kickoff is a 1pm, pregame show begins at noon on 900 CHML and 900chml.com.
