French high school still in elementary building

Hamilton, ON, Canada / AM900 CHML

It’s the start of another year for Hamilton’s French Catholic High School and its students are making do with an elementary school building.

The French school board launched a lawsuit last fall against the province saying the Government of Ontario is denying the French students equal access to quality education by not providing the funding needed to upgrade the elementary school to high school standards.

Mere-Teresa High School has 335 students and the facility has some classrooms with no windows, a small gym, and no yard.

The Ministry of Education says it won’t comment on a case that is before the courts, but did say it has provided the Hamilton French Catholic School Board with over 222-million dollars in capital funding since 2003.
