It takes a lot of nerve to make the kind of comments that former Harper Cabinet Minister Tony Clement is making about the Saudi Arms Deal that the government has apparently signed off on.
Clement says Canada should back out of the deal because, in his words, there’s a chance that the government may use the military equipment to quell insurrections against the government.
Let’s remember that it was the Harper government, which included Clement, that negotiated this deal in the first place, and there wasn’t any concern expressed about potential political instability in the region at that time.
It seems that Mr. Clement’s pang of conscience occurred just around the time his government lost the election and he became a Member of the Opposition.
Clement has taken the title to heart, opposing anything and everything the government is doing, even the deals his former government concocted .
And, as for Mr. Clement’s lament about the secrecy of the deal, maybe he would like to comment about the secret deal that he and his former government struck with U S Steel, which left thousands of steel workers and pensioners and Hamilton taxpayers in the lurch .
We expect some gamesmanship and partisan rhetoric in the political arena, but this is taking it to a whole, new level.
Hypocrisy, The name is Tony Clement !
