I see that there’s a move afoot to establish short term daycare for those who need to access services at City Hall.
Frankly, I didn’t know there was a need for such a program, but, in the interest of making City Hall more people friendly, I think it’s a good idea.
The City could partner with a community group that already provides daycare, such as the Downtown Y and the cost would be minimal.
But, on the topic of ‘people friendly’, let’s deal with an issue that’s been bugging citizens for years now, namely parking at City Hall.
Let’s get right to the point; I don’t think citizens who attend meetings at City Hall should have to pay to park there.
Concerned taxpayers who take time out of their busy day to attend a planning meeting or public works committee or any other sub committee often end up sitting there for hours at a time while Councilor plods through the agenda.
And , as the meeting drags on, and they always do, those same concerned citizens are running out to the parking lot with a handful of loonies and toonies to feed the parking meter.
It’s like being taxed for taking part in the democratic process.
Councilors ensure that they have adequate amenities for their long meetings; they should extend the same courtesy to citizens who pay for it.
