Staggering numbers have emerged showing the cost of inaction on mental health issues to both the people and the economy in the GTHA.
A new report by CivicAction estimates that over 1.5 million people in the GTHA have experienced a mental health issue, that’s 1 in 2 employees.
82 per cent said it affects their work and 71 per cent of those employees continue to feel concerned about workplace stigma.
CivicAction CEO, Sevaun Palvetzian says it’s in everyone’s best interest to support those experiencing mental health issue.
“That 17 billion dollars in lost productivity over the next decade really speaks to the need to give employees the supports that they need.”
Adding “for managers who were trained in mental health support for their employees, the short term disability leave went down by 20 per cent.”
CivicAction is calling on employers and colleagues to start a conversation about mental health, to receive training on how to recognize behaviour changes and to offer support to those who take time off work.
