Government officials are now confirming that one of two Canadians being held hostage in the Philippines has been killed.
68 year old John Ridsdel of Calgary has been identified as the victim.
He is one of four tourists including Canadian Robert Hall, a Norwegian man and a Filipino woman that were kidnapped last September by Abu Sayyaf militants.
The militants had threatened to kill one of the three male hostages if a large ransom was not paid by 3 p.m. Monday local time 3 a.m. ET.
Canada and other western countries consider Abu Sayyaf a terrorist organization.
The organization has relied on huge ransoms earned from kidnappings primarily of Western tourists and missionaries to survive for more than two decades.
