The first positive case of sexually transmitted Zika Virus has been detected in Canada, right here in Ontario.
The Public Health Agency of Canada and the Ontario Ministry of Health made a joint statement on Monday confirming the case at the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg.
“The individual from Ontario is suspected to have contracted the virus from a sexual partner who was diagnosed with Zika virus after travelling to an affected country” says the statement.
There have been no confirmed cases of locally-acquired Zika virus through mosquitoes.
Bites remain the primary method of transmission.
